According to the SNGR, “Immediate response actions to control and eliminate forest fire” have been deployed in the area, where 345 hectares of pine and pajonal forest have been destroyed.

Authorities have not informed of death victims yet and there are no reports of injuries or deaths as a result of the accident, which began last Friday.

Under the coordination of a Quilanga Emergency Operations Committee, fire brigades from the neighboring municipalities of Saraguro, Catamayo, Espíndola and Calvas have contributed to fighting the fires.

In addition, a “Unified Command Post (UGP) has been activated in the communal house of San Antonio de las Aradas to deploy actions and ensure an effective response.”

Furthermore, Armed Forces personnel have joined these actions, while the Quilanga Fire Department has received support from local community members to maintain the operation that seeks to extinguish and quell the fire.

Specialists have explained that at this time the Andean and coastal localities are exposed to a greater threat due to high temperatures, low humidity in the environment, low cloud cover, as well as increased wind speed and ultraviolet radiation.
